A portion of 2020 Ticket Sales will be benefitting our charity partner: United Sommeliers Foundation
We are proud to be partnering with the United Sommeliers Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organization created to provide emergency financial assistance to sommeliers who have lost their job through no fault of their own such as the COVID-19 pandemic. A portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to the USF which they will use to fund financial grants to help sommeliers cover basic necessities such as housing, utilities, groceries, medical needs, child care and other essentials.
Please visit www.unitedsommeliersfoundation.org to learn more about their mission, donate directly to their cause and learn about how you can contribute wine to or buy wine from their fundraising auction.
Despite their ability to more significantly influence revenue and profit for their businesses, Sommeliers are often thought of as the most expendable employees in a restaurant operation.
- They work long difficult hours in an extremely physically, mentally and emotionally demanding job for minimal compensation.
- They are often making much less than servers though require much more specialization and significant investment in studying, education and certification to the tune of thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.
- Many sommeliers live paycheck to paycheck and do not have health insurance or backup resources to help support themselves and their families.
- When it comes to hiring decisions, they are and will continue to be the first employees to let go, and the last to rehire due to their non-essential operational position.
We as a community are establishing this charitable organization with the intent of helping as many sommeliers as possible through the current crisis and also to establish a permanent resource and infrastructure for those impacted by future events which might cause sommeliers to lose employment through no fault of their own.
